NDP MP, Charlie Angus is asking the Federal government to stop the soggy bandaid fixes and really help the people of Kashechewan.

The community of 1,900 has ordered a full evacuation in case the very nearby Albany River breaches the dike and floods the community once again.  Angus says this is the fourth time in four years, residents are being forced from their homes because of poorly managed infrastructure.

“This is a community that is not in a safe place. We had an agreement with the government in 2006 to move Kashechewan to higher ground but they back off. Instead they’ve thrown millions of dollars at quick fixes. They spent $20 million last year to fix the dike wall and the community still isn’t safe.”

Angus says although it is a full scale evacuation, some trained professionals are staying behind to manage  pumps and keep an eye on the infrastructure.

Residents have been shipped to Smooth Rock Falls, Kapuskasing, Hearst, and even as far as Cornwall.  Angus adds, 350 residents are still living in Kapuskasing from last year’s flood.

Angus finished by saying there’s no timetable for Kashechewan’s residents to return home, it all depends on the water flows.
