OPPThe OPP is cracking down on seatbelt safety after some startling statistics. During the week of September 7 – 13, 2015, seven people were killed in motor vehicle collisions in Ontario – six of those people were not wearing a seat belt.

In the north-east region, out of 780 accidents causing injuries, 61 of those contained people injured by not wearing a seatbelt.

OPP Sgt. Crystal Jone says OPP will be actively watching for drivers and passengers not wearing seatbelts as it is the best way to keep yourself safe in a collision.

You can be fined up to $240 and lose two demerit points if you or someone under the age of 16 in your car is caught not wearing a seatbelt.

The campaign runs until October 9th.
