hockeyIt’s more than your average hockey tournament, and it’s here in Timmins this weekend.

The Ontario Mining Cup is back for a third year.  It will pit 16 teams against one another at two arenas across the city, and the tournament’s Keiran Swanton says they’re doing something a little different this year.

They’ll be splitting up into three divisions, based on skill level.

There’s also a skills competition, as well as a Saturday night bash that most competitors look forward to each year.

Jack and the Ripperz and the Amateur Voodoo Club will play, and there’s a number of prizes up for grabs including a 58″ TV and an all-inclusive trip to either Toronto or Montreal for an NHL game experience.

Those not competing pay $15 for the dinner and music gala, while every bit of hockey played at three arenas across the city are free to attend.

Any money that is raised will go towards the Canadian Institute of Mining (CIM)’s high school scholarship fund.  Each year, CIM gives $1,000 scholarships to students going to college or university for a program in mining.

The action starts Friday at 4pm and wraps up Sunday afternoon.
