This year, the City of Timmins celebrates its 35th anniversary with sister-city Naoshima, Japan, and two of the town’s officials have accepted an invitation from Mayor Steve Black to visit Timmins in celebration of the milestone.

The anniversary falls on the same weekend as the 8th Annual Great Canadian Kayak Challenge and Festival, providing a perfect venue to host these special guests. The festival venue also ties in well with Naoshima’s slogan “From the Seto Inland Sea to the World. Focusing on nature, culture and the environment; we are creating a new tomorrow.”

“While Timmins is not situated anywhere near the sea, it is surrounded by pristine forests and over 500 lakes, rivers and streams,” said Mayor Black in an invitation letter to Town of Naoshima Mayor Michiru Hamanaka.

“We would honour the opportunity to accompany you on a pontoon boat ride on our mighty Mattagami River, or join in the family leisure paddle and shore lunch, as we continue to build a strong relationship between our communities.”

The anniversary will also be recognized by a special civic reception in honour of the guests.
