The Paralympic Games in Rio will have some local content.

Timmins’ own Meghan Mahon is on her way down to Brazil to compete for a medal as part of the Canadian women’s goalball team.

The 20-year old, who now lives in Sudbury for school, is competing in her first Paralympic games.

According to the official Paralympic games website, Mahon “was born with a genetic condition called achromatopsia, which is a cone-rod retinal dystrophy condition. She has 10 percent vision and lives a full and independent life despite being legally blind. Her brother Travis has the same condition.”

Mahon is playing for a Canadian side that claimed gold in the 2000 and 2004 games.  The women were fifth in London four years ago.

Nancy Morin leads the team, making her fifth Paralympic appearance.
