The Timmins Police Service – Traffic Section has been crunching the numbers in relation to the number of collisions that are occurring at the intersection of Shirley Street and Riverside Drive.

The total number of collisions at this intersection so far for 2016 has now surpassed the total number of collisions at that same intersection for the entire year of 2015.

So far for 2016, 28% of collisions in the city of Timmins occur at this intersection; that’s higher than one in four.

It stands to reason, with increases in volume anticipated for holiday season shopping in this area, the total number of collisions will increase as well.

A study of the 2016 collisions at this intersection indicate that distracted driving, speed too fast for conditions and following too closely are the negative driving behaviors that lead to collisions in this area.

Collisions are more common at this intersection during the morning hours of between 7:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. and then in the afternoon between 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m.

The Timmins Police Service is monitoring this intersection at peak hours to enhance roadway safety in this area. The motoring public must do their part as well by policing their own driving behaviors so that they reach their destination safely.

The Timmins Police view the overwhelming majority of these collisions as preventable incidents.

More attention, less speed, and increased alertness behind the wheel will likely affect year end totals and spare individual drivers significant grief that comes with any collision.
