Timmins community members who contributed to the Canadian feature film Two Lovers and a Bear will get a
chance to see it in their hometown on select dates in early December.

This romance about two star-crossed lovers who find refuge from their pasts in the Arctic was partly filmed in Timmins and the surrounding area, along with Iqaluit and Ottawa. It is Montreal-born director Kim Nguyen’s first fiction film, following his Academy Award-nominated Rebelle (War Witch).

The film stars Tatiana Maslany, who recently won the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for Orphan Black, and Dane DeHaan (The Amazing Spider-Man 2). The film premiered internationally at la Quinzaine des Réalisateurs at Cannes in May and at TIFF in September.

Timmins hosted a large production team for multiple weeks of filming in select locations across the city. Many local firms supplied services and products, and over 100 citizens were involved in the production in roles such as coordination, support services, extras, and background casting.

“We anticipate that the screenings will bring in a few hundred people,” said Jason Boissonneault, Timmins Film Society media representative. “We imagine a lot of folks will be curious to see if they can recognize the landscape. We know for certain that Porcupine Lake, Northern College, and the Timmins Airport made the final cut, so we are interested in seeing how they presented our great city.”

Encouraged by the success of the production of Two Lovers and a Bear, the Timmins Economic Development
Corporation has engaged in a lm and TV production strategy to better understand the industry, help local artists, and position the city as the ideal winter filming location. Cultural industries like media arts are important for community and economic development. Sunday, December 4 at 1:30 PM and Monday, December 5 at 7 PM and 9 PM at Imagine Cinemas Timmins
