A water and sewer rate increase is coming, but by how much is yet to be determined.

There’s a recommendation to increase it by $60 ($20 for water, $40 for sewer), but Councillor Pat Bamford is pushing for a $50 increase instead ($15 for water, $35 for sewer).

He says it gives much needed wiggle room to residents in town, who are paying high property taxes.

It should be noted as it stands, the rate Timmins residents pay are considered low compared to the rest of the province.

Timmins is also the only city among the five large urban centres in the North that pay a flat rate.

And it shows too.

Timmins paid $987 in 2015 (based on water consumption of 400m3 a year).  The next closest was Sault Ste. Marie at $1,181.
