City council isn’t exactly thrilled with a recent announcement that TD Bank is closing their doors in South Porcupine.

Mayor Steve Black says it creates a host of accessibility issues, as clients will have to use the Timmins branch to get their banking done.

He says it goes against a recent Age Friendly strategy, adding many baby boomers and elderly residents can’t get around as easily.

TD Bank’s Daria Hill recently said in an email that “customers in South Porcupine can continue to do their banking through the TD mobile app; online through EasyWeb; by phone through EasyLine or at any other branch.”

Black countered that argument with some pretty telling stats.

“According to a Statistics Canada study regarding the online activities of the Canadian boomers and seniors,” he read, “Only 58% of people aged 45 to 64, and 40% of people aged 65 and older will use electronic banking, including bill payment.”

A letter is being sent to TD outlining the city’s concerns.

The closure is expected sometime in the spring.
