The Timmins-Misiway Healthy Kids Community Challenge is hosting a week of free activities for children and families from March 20-26, 2017 to celebrate Canada Water Week.

Canada Water Week is a week-long celebration from coast-to-coast aimed at raising the profile and understanding of water through fun and educational events. It is held annually in the third week of March to coincide with World Water Day on March 22.

“The Healthy Kids Community Challenge is celebrating Canada Water Week as part of our Water Does Wonders! theme that encourages children and families to pick water as their first choice for hydration,” said Madison Mizzau, project manager of The Challenge in Timmins. “Our community partners did an amazing job in planning a variety of events, so there really is something for everyone in our community to enjoy.”

Activities that will be taking place throughout the week include an open house at the Science Village, crafts and story time for kids at the Timmins Public Library, a nutrition workshop with Porcupine Health Unit dietitians, tours of the city’s water filtration plant, free family swims at the Archie Dillon Sportsplex, and lots more!

To celebrate World Water Day on March 22, there will be a film screening of the award-winning movie Tapped at Cinema 6, followed by a Q&A session with local water and environmental experts.

Tapped is an eye-opening film that examines the role of the bottled water industry and its effects on our health, climate change, and pollution.

Admission is free of charge, but there is a suggested donation of $2 per person with all funds raised being donated to a local charity.  Tickets can be picked up at the door or in advance at Misiway Milopemahtesewin Community Health Centre.

The week will cap off with a ‘Fun with Water’ Family Day on Saturday, March 25 at école secondaire catholique Thériault.

There will be lots of fun and interactive activities for kids, tons of giveaways, delicious snacks, and grand prizes to be won!
