The area of Commando Lake is gearing up to look much better this summer, thanks to three grants from the Canadian government.

The federal government is investing $792,500 to support infrastructure and business growth, while positioning the Town of Cochrane as a tourism destination of choice for outdoor enthusiasts.

The FedNor funding will support three strategic initiatives that will help create middle-class jobs and a strong economy for Cochrane and surrounding areas.

Sudbury MP Paul Lefebvre—on behalf of Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for FedNor Navdeep Bains—made the announcement today during a multi-stop tour of the region.

“I’m pleased that the Government of Canada recognizes our efforts to solidify Cochrane’s position as a major tourism draw for Northern Ontario that is helping to fuel the regional economy,” says Cochrane Mayor Peter Politis.

“By investing to improve and expand our outdoor infrastructure and trail systems, FedNor is helping us to send the clear signal that our community is welcoming and open for business.”

$500,000 is coming from the Northern Ontario Development Program to construct a permanent festival and events pavilion on the shores of Commando Lake.  Once complete, this pavilion will feature a shelter for up to 500 people, a permanent kitchen, restrooms, change rooms and a stage.

$192,500 will allow Cochrane to implement a regional marketing and promotional campaign to attract Quebec tourists.

This cash comes from FedNor’s Economic Development Initiative and is looking to support outdoor tourism throughout the region by developing “new promotional materials, install signage and trail cameras, track trail usage, support tourism operators, encourage regional partnerships and implement a social media and online marketing campaign that aligns with provincial branding for power sports touring.”

And an extra $100,000 comes from the Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program to enhance and expand the local bike trails. According to the release, this will connect existing trails at Memorial Park with the path along Railway Street.
