It feels like forever, but action in local soccer returns after the Stars and Thunder break.

Two games go this evening in the Timmins Men’s Soccer League, when the undefeated Timmins United plays Let’s Try Soccer Again at 7:30pm. The winless Gunners FC will look to upset the Rebels at 9pm.

RECAP OF LAST COUPLE WEEKS
Taking a look at the standings for both the Men’s and Women’s leagues going into the extended break, both defending champions are leading the pack.

Timmins United are 7-0 and hold a 12 point lead on the men’s side.

The Dunrite Rubber Wolfpack are also undefeated, and remain the class of the women’s league at 6-0. Their advantage isn’t as sizeable, only four points up on second place.

We’ll start with regular season play for the men, where there were five games over the last couple weeks and only two teams gaining points in the standings.

First, Timmins United nabbed a pair of clean sheets. They defeated the still-winless Gunners FC squad 9-0 back on Tuesday, June 13th and then followed that up with a 5-0 victory over Blizzard last Tuesday (June 20th).

Meantime, Let’s Try Soccer Again tabbed a trio of wins. They took out the Rebels 4-2 on the 13th of June and later snagged two wins over Gunners FC (4-1 on Thursday, June 15th and a forefeit win on June 20th).

For the women, the Wolfpack have gone 4-0 since June 12th—including a 2-1 win over Rehab Plus on June 17th as part of a “Day of Soccer” event. We’ll have more on that in a moment.

The Wolfpack beat Tisdale Plumbing and Heating on the 12th by a score of 5-1. Then it was a 3-1 win over Porcupine Kinsmen on June 15th and a 5-0 win over East End Construction on the 19th.

Minus the above loss, Rehab Plus had a good week. They blanked East End Construction 5-0 on June 12th, tied the Restore Physiotherapy Pandas 2-2 and knocked off the Timmins Terminators 3-2 on June 19th.

Rehab and the Pandas are tied in second spot in TWLS. The Pandas fell to the Timmins Terminators 1-0 on June 15th.

The other non-Day of Soccer matchup saw the Porcupine Kinsmen tie the Timmins Terminators 2-2 on June 14th.

A marathon of games were held on June 17th as part of a “Day of Soccer,” a collective effort from both the men’s and women’s leagues.

Five TWLS league games were held (including the above mentioned game):

  • Tisdale Plumbing and Heating/Eclipse Financial and Rehab Plus end in a 1-1 draw.
  • Porcupine Kinsmen def. East End Construction 3-0.
  • Restore Physiotherapy Pandas def. Tisdale Plumbing and Heating/Eclipse Financial 3-0.
  • Timmins Terminators def. Porcupine Kinsmen 4-2.

The men’s side held games as part of the re-introduction of the “Timmins Cup,” a separate competition from regular season play.

Scores from those games aren’t readily available.
