The OPP’s Fall Seat belt campaign is back, in conjunction with the Ministry of Transportation.

They say OPP officers will be out on patrol and conducting seat belt spot checks during the campaign, which runs September 27th to October 6th.

“It only takes a few seconds to buckle up,” says South Porcupine OPP Detachment Commander, Acting Staff Sergeant Ryan Dougan, “A properly worn seat belt greatly increases your chances of surviving a motor vehicle collision.”

Those caught not wearing a seat belt can be charged and face a $240 fine, plus two demerit points.

But that penalty is nothing compared to what 45 people faced in 2016.

OPP say those 45 people died in collisions on OPP-patrolled roads in 2016 where the deceased wasn’t wearing a seat belt.
