NEOMA voted in favour of Timmins’ bid to bring Noront’s Ferrochrome production facility last week, an initiative that could see nearly 500 jobs brought to town.

Black notes they passed another resolution to encourage all three major parties in the province to make their positions clear on long-term energy rates for Noront. This way, Black says a plan can be in place to ensure processing work isn’t shipped out of the province.

“I think (it’s a big deal) when you look at the scope of the project and the jobs that are involved, but also the spinoff that it will have for the communities,” he said, adding there’s another key piece to the puzzle: Ontario Northland.

“Any bid involving Timmins would involve Ontario Northland, which is good for the whole region in providing an anchor tenant,” he said, “All of our communities rely on that rail system to be in tact long-term wise.”

Black adds Timmins has always been a great section of the province when it comes to the natural resource and mining sector and is hopeful Noront will factor that into the bid.
