**COMMUNITY LEGAL EDUCATION ONTARIO NEWS RELEASE**

Community Legal Education Ontario / Éducation juridique communautaire Ontario (CLEO) is a public legal education organization that produces clear, reliable information on key legal issues in areas such as housing, employment, social assistance, family law and more, in several languages. All of their information is available on their website, www.cleo.on.ca and many CLEO publications can be ordered in print. They have a second legal information website, Steps to Justice, www.stepstojustice.ca, which

gives reliable and practical information on common legal problems in a step-by-step format including information to help people work through their legal problems.

CLEO also supports community organizations in providing high-quality and useful legal information to people in their area. To do this work, CLEO offers Legal Capability Workshops across the province to front-line staff of community organizations. These workshops give workers tools and resources to assist clients to find reliable legal information and referrals.

In their efforts to conduct more outreach in northeastern Ontario, CLEO is coming to Kapuskasing on October 17 and Timmins on October 18 to offer these in-person workshops.

CLEO’s Community Outreach Manager, Michelle Cader, says, “When people have legal problems, there are many reasons why they may not seek the help of lawyers or other legal service providers. Instead they often approach front-line and community workers who they trust to help them address their problems. But these trusted workers may need some tools and strategies in order to effectively and efficiently help clients with legal problems. CLEO’s Legal Capability Workshops are designed to share an approach and resources to help them do this work with knowledge, skill, comfort, and confidence.”

The workshops are designed to help community workers detect clients’ legal issues, identify sources of reliable legal information, understand the difference between legal information and legal advice, and identify providers of legal advice and representation who can help clients. They are 3 hours in length and are free of charge.
