At City Hall today, the Mayor declared this week, from Oct. 8th-12th to be Lord’s Kitchen Week in Timmins.

As the weather cools down, the need to feed the city’s homeless with a hot meal is as important as ever.

The entire week is a fundraising week for the Lord’s Kitchen; a time when the non-profit organization looks to the public and corporate sponsors for money to continue operating. This is the 32nd year the Lord’s Kitchen has been running in Timmins, and as Deanna Russell, President of the Lord’s Kitchen Society says, the operation is growing every year.

“It’s getting bigger every year,” Russell said. “We thought we’d have homelessness and hunger cleared up in five years and we’d all go back to our jobs. But it’s not so, it’s getting more.”

Russell says she’s noticed an increase in the city’s homeless in recent years, and an increase in the hungry who benefit from the hot meal they get every week at the Lord’s Kitchen.

“I’ts just very hard for them to find living space,” Russell said, “and they have to be helped. And that’s one of our mandates, is to help them.”

The Lord’s Kitchen provides a hot, nourishing meal to whoever needs it, every Thursday from 4:00-5:30 PM. People who come can have as many plates as they wish. And some social services are offered as well.

“We have a couple of people from the local churches that come and talk to the people individually at the table,” Russell said, “and give them some help or direct them to where they can get some help.”

The Lord’s Kitchen is completely funded by donations and its run by volunteers who give their time to help with the large feeding operation the kitchen runs.

“It takes a good 80-100 people to run the kitchen in the morning,” Russell said. “We have people to set up tables, people to set the tables, people to cook, people to serve and people to pickup. So we go through a large staff and we’re always looking for volunteers.”
