Every day this week we are featuring platform highlights from the Ward Councillor candidates in the upcoming election. Our stations have reached out to each Councillor candidate to outline their platform for listeners. This is Ward 5 Councillor candidate Alex Szczebonski’s submitted platform.

My name is Alex Szczebonski and I’m a candidate for Ward 5

As a Civil Engineering Technologist, I was initial employment with Ministry of Transport, Hwy division New Liskeard.

The Ministry Then offered me a staff position in the Southern Ontario.

Like in today’s world my wife and I had to make a choice, to move or stay in Timmins.

We choose to stay in Timmins and build a life in Timmins.

I worked for various companies specializing in Industrial, commercial, Municipal as well as Institutional construction. Specializing in site supervision and concentrating on estimating and cost control.

In 1979 began employment with Timmins Housing Authority, a Provincial Crown Agency.

This position entailed the maintaining and redeveloping many Senior and family housing units in this region.

The responsibilities included establishing operational maintenance programs, service contracts, and purchasing agreements.

In the Capital reconstruction work area my responsibility included establishing building condition assessments, developing proposals for upgrades and expansion.

Establishing budgets for short and long-term capital funding requirements for all Ministry Housing properties in the district.

My Responsibilities included tendering contracts, valued in the millions of dollars.

This included hire consultants, prepare specifications and contract documents, call tenders, and oversee construction management to completion of projects.

This experience with Building Asset management skills, project development and contract administration would certainly be a valued asset at the council table to ask the right questions.

Over the years I’ve been involved in numerous organizations and boards.

This experience has taught me the importance of governance and the committee system.

My Vision

Council takes back its’ responsibilities by re-establishing the committee system. Construction and ongoing operational costs of projects need to be properly planned and vetted at the council table and transparently explained to taxpayers.

A summary of business case analysis for all municipal expenditures, that includes all operational and capital spending be available to the public.

The new council must work to together with local partners to develop a competitive

Business plan for these issues.

I am committed to the city supporting the development of business opportunities throughout the city with any means at their disposal.

I am committed to a responsible municipal government that can provide the services residents expect at property tax rates they can afford.
