There is an extreme cold weather alert in effect for Cochrane, Iroquois Falls and Timmins this morning.

This is the statement from Environment Canada:

A prolonged period of very cold wind chills is expected.

Wind chill values of minus 40 to minus 45 continue this morning.

Conditions will begin to slowly moderate today. Wind chill values near minus 25 to minus 30 are expected tonight. As a result, the Extreme Cold warnings are expected to be ended by this afternoon.

Risks are greater for young children, older adults, people with chronic illnesses, people working or exercising outdoors, and those without proper shelter.

Dress warmly. Dress in layers that you can remove if you get too warm. The outer layer should be wind resistant.

Cover up. Frostbite can develop within minutes on exposed skin, especially with wind chill.

If it’s too cold for you to stay outside, it’s too cold for your pet to stay outside.

The City of Timmins has released statements alerting the public to shelters that are available when the temperature goes below -27C at night. Here is the schedule for warming shelters available to the city’s homeless:

Evenings from 5:30pm to the following morning at 8am at the Timmins Native Friendship Centre ( 179 Kirby Avenue)

Daytime from 8:30am to 5:30pm at Living Space (27 Cedar Street North)

School buses are also being affected by the cold. School buses have been cancelled in Kapuskasing, Hearst, Smooth Rock Falls, Cochrane, Iroquois Falls, Timmins and Matheson. To read the full list of affected bus routes, go here.
