The Timmins Flyers Midget A Hockey team should be shaking in their skates, according to members of the Timmins Police Service, who are gearing up for a spirited charity hockey game against the Flyers on January 30th.

The Timmins Police Communications Coordinator Marc Depatie joked that the TPS team “sees these young Timmins Flyers as nothing more than glorified ankle biters” and the TPS team is ready to “take them to school”.

The trash talk is all in good fun, and the game itself is for a worthy cause. Funds will be raised to help support the family of Alyssa McGaghran. Alyssa is a 6 year old with a rare genetic disorder called Tuberous Sclerosis Complex, which is a defect that promotes the growth of tumors in multiple organs of the body. Alyssa has tumors in her brain, heart, kidneys and behind her left eye, and she requires regular visits to Sick kids Hospital. The funds raised from the charity hockey game will go towards supporting Alyssa and her family.

The hockey showdown will see the Timmins Flyers take on the Timmins Police Service, as well as members of the Timmins Fire Department and the OPP. The TPS roster include “Dangerous” Dani Durepos, Jonathan “mad dog” Minard, and Darren “cement hands” McGaghran. The Flyers take on a charitable cause each year, and the TPS is happy to provide officers to support this cause.

Depatie says the Timmins Police members are under going a “series and rigorous” training program, they’ll be “firing on all cylinders.”

“It’s time to worry,” he joked, “If they haven’t made plans to leave town already, then it’s too late, they have to show up at the arena.”

“We hope the public shows up in great numbers,” he added, “to support this worthy cause. It speaks to the level of community spirit that exists here in Timmins and we’re thankful to take part in this in any way we can.”

The event will feature a 50/50 draw, a prize table, silent auction of NHL jerseys, and a door prize.

The entry fee for the game is a donation, and the puck drops at 8 PM at the Archie Dillon Sportsplex on January 30th.
