**NORTHERN COLLEGE NEWS RELEASE**

Northern College is proud to announce that longstanding Health Sciences professor and former course coordinator Johanne Carbonneau has been awarded the status of professor emeritus.

Throughout her 30-year career as a professor at Northern College, Carbonneau has shaped generations of nursing professionals, pioneered changes in teaching techniques and was the driving force behind the articulation agreement that allowed Northern to offer degree level studies in nursing (BScN) at its Timmins and Kirkland Lake campuses in collaboration with Laurentian University.

“She helped guide Northern College’s transition from diploma to baccalaureate nursing program in 2000, successfully navigating the challenging waters of establishing and maintaining a university-college collaboration,” said fellow professor and course coordinator Joan Martin-Saarinen.

“Johanne has helped educate 30 years’ worth of RNs and some RPNs. She demanded their very best, using a firm but kind approach and they rose to meet her expectations.”

This focus and dedication to student experience and success is a quality that Northern College feels strongly about celebrating, faculty like Carbonneau not only influence the students they teach, but they inspire their peers as well.

“When I first started at Northern, she was a mentor and a role model, guiding me through the various ‘stages’ of the academic year,” said fellow faculty member Mireille Walsh. “Her expertise and her pearls of wisdom in curricular development and delivery was shared unequivocally.”

Carbonneau’s dedication to every aspect of a high quality college education had a lasting impact on her students, choosing to lead by example and inspire them through a commitment to passion and positivity for the field.

“Her fun-loving, gentle, yet informed approach facilitates our learning and success in the classroom, and, as a learner I consistently felt supported in my studies,” said nursing graduate Amanda Kioke. “Her visible involvement in special projects, committees and various working groups inspires us as students to get involved and take action, even amidst a never-ending workload.”

Northern College is committed to recognizing educational excellence, choosing to award the designation of professor emeritus to those who have had a lasting impact not only on the institution, but on the community and field in which they teach.

“In awarding the status of professor emeritus to Johanne, she stands as another outstanding example of the high caliber of teaching excellence in our health science programs,” stated Northern College President, Dr. Fred Gibbons. “Commitment, passion and innovation embody Johanne’s contributions to her students, colleagues and our college.”
