A flag-raising ceremony at the Timmins City Hall on Friday, September 25th 2015 from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm to celebrate “la journée des franco-ontariennes et des franco-ontariens”

Franco-Ontarian Day recognizes the contributions of francophone’s in Timmins as well in Ontario, and highlights the population’s historical presence and cultural, political, social, and economic importance. This year’s flag-raising ceremony is organized by the Le Centre culturel La Ronde, who has a goal to promote, stimulate and facilitate the French life within the community of Timmins.

The Franco-Ontarian flag was first revealed on September 25th, 1975 in Sudbury, at the University of Sudbury, a federated college of Laurentian University. Mister Gaétan Gervais, history professor at Laurentian University, planned the project alongside a group of franco-ontarian students: Michel Dupuis, Donald Obonsawin and Yves Tassé, as well as Jacqueline England, who sewed the first flag.

In June 2001, the Legislative Assembly of Ontario anonymously adopted a resolution to make the franco-ontarian flag the 8th symbol for the province and on April 26th, 2010, the Legislative Assembly of Ontario proclaimed September 25th of each year as Franco-Ontarian Day.
