The march for women’s right to freedom, safety, and respect is happening tomorrow night in Timmins.

Seven organizations are putting Take Back the night together including the Timmins and Area Women in Crisis who says the march is empowering and it keeps growing each year.

“Sexual harassment is real in Timmins,” says Public Education Coordinator Becky Mason “We’re near waiting list capacity in our local shelters.  All three are nearly full.”

“Sadly there is a higher number First nations women walking through our doors and that’s why this year’s theme is focused on missing and murdered aboriginal women.”

Stats Canada and The Canadian Institute for Research on Women studies show nearly 1,400 sexual assaults occur every day in Canada, while only 6% are reported.  Mason says this march can help bring awareness and maybe help a woman get the help she needs.

The march itself starts at the Timmins and Area Women’s Crisis Centre on Wilson Ave.then up to Mountjoy and up Third Ave, then left on Pine St and onto Algonquin, finally arriving back to the Crisis Centre.
