It’s no wonder the Timmins Economic Development Corporation is seeing record numbers.

In the past year, they’ve been able to establish a rail industrial park in the east end that’s allowing businesses like Calabrian Corporation to find Timmins an attractive destination.

Looking at 2016 thus far, the TEDC has already leveraged more than $7-million dollars, when the target coming into the year was just $2-million.

Chairman Fred Gibbons says attracting Calabrian and Chinese investors has been their greatest victory.

“One of the assets that’s been missing from the city for a very long time has been rail service,” he said.

“And with the types of businesses that we’ve been speaking to, they’re very heavy industry.  They rely upon their products, raw materials coming by rail and then shipping out the finished products by rail as well.”

Gibbons says they’ve lost opportunities more recently because they didn’t have the rail service.

But it’s all about looking up, and looking ahead for the TEDC.  They’ve got numerous projects on the go, including their initiative to attract filmmakers to town.

Gibbons says they’re on track to see some good numbers at the end of the year.
