UPDATE: Grocery store fire in Smooth Rock Falls

“Our grocery store is on fire.”

That was Smooth Rock Falls native Dave Gagnon at the beginning of video taken Tuesday morning in the town, as smoke filled the air.

The smoke, from the local Freshmart, which is the only grocery store in town.

Town CAO and Director of Economic Development Luc Denault says he’s having meetings with the owners of area Freshmarts to see what steps can be taken.

He says the fire started at an adjacent building, and made it’s way over to the store.

“There’s no official report, but the buildings are not salvageable,” Denault said, “We don’t anticipate any recovery of the grocery store.”

The cause of the fire is unknown.
