**NORTHERN COLLEGE NEWS RELEASE**

Northern College is pleased to announce recent Federal Government investment in
Mining Research.
Northern College is one of 90 recipients at colleges, cégeps and polytechnics across the country
receiving over 73 million dollars in total funding which is part of the Federal Government’s larger
Canadian Science Vision program, which aims to invest more than 10 billion dollars in science and
research.

200 thousand dollars will be invested in Northern College’s Innovation Hub expanding its ability to
coordinate and support new applied research projects by creating a new technology development
position.

“I believe that improving the availability, efficacy, and functionality of mining technologies will benefit
our catchment area by creating jobs, improving workplace safety, and helping businesses realize
efficiencies in their markets,” stated Amy McKillip, Manager, Applied Research, Entrepreneurship and
Innovation at Northern College. “This, in turn, will help local and regional companies become more
sustainable and competitive in the global mining marketplace.”

McKillip maintains that funding initiatives like this help to attract students to schools like Northern,
offering them opportunity to further their learning through experiential opportunities to work with the
relevant industry. This perspective is one that is shared by the Federal Government.

“Our government is committed to returning science and research to their rightful place. We’re investing
in students and small- to medium-sized businesses so they can work together on a diverse range of
research projects to boost economic development and create jobs across the country,” stated the
Honourable Kirsty Duncan, Minister of Science and Sport. “With these projects, colleges, cégeps and
polytechnics will be making a real difference in the lives of Canadians in their own communities.”

Northern College applauds the Federal Government’s focus on innovation and research at the
institutional level, allowing Colleges the opportunity to provide students with a learning environment
that better fosters the creativity and imagination that will fuel the next wave of industry progress and
innovation.

of this new position will help advance innovation and technology development with the college’s
industry partners.
