**CITY OF TIMMINS PRESS RELEASE**

The City of Timmins and the Mushkegowuk Council have officially renewed a Memorandum of Understanding, initially signed on September 29, 2011, committing to the continued development of stronger relationships to build more vibrant communities.

The renewed agreement was signed yesterday in Timmins, during the Mushkegowuk Council’s meeting of its Special Task Force for Healthier Communities. Mayor George Pirie, said it was a tremendous privilege to be signing the agreement.

“This is not just an idle comment, and I believe we can show Ontario and Canada what reconciliation looks like. The spirit is in this room,” he said. “I’m looking forward to seeing the results of this continued relationship.”

Mushkegowuk Council Grand Chief Jonathon Solomon recognized that a lot of work lies ahead, which will include challenges and issues that are delicate to talk about, such as racism.

“As we move forward, we need to stay united and stand together,” he said.

Background:

In 2019, Mayor George Pirie, CAO Dave Landers, Grand Chief Solomon, and the administrative staff from Mushkegowuk Council met to review the existing memorandum and to recommit to joint activity. The numerous meetings led to a shift in focus from being largely about joint economic development to establishing a broader relationship agreement.

This Memorandum of Understanding recognizes and respects that Timmins is situated in Treaty 9 and respects the Spirit and Intent of the Treaty, including the oral agreements between the Crown and First Nations. It also recognizes there is a growing population in Timmins of Mushkegowuk citizens that desire social, economic and cultural growth, while promoting a healthy environment and addressing racism.

The document is available on the City of Timmins’ website and will also be made available on the Mushkegowuk Council website.
