A local multi-time Stanley Cup Champion with the Toronto Maple Leafs passed away over the weekend.

Angus “Gus” Mortson died peacefully at the Golden Manor at the age of 90-years old.

According to the obituary on Miron-Wilson’s website, the Kirkland Lake native leaves behind his wife of 66 years Sheila Mortson (nee Kennedy) and six children, 17 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.  He was pre-deceased by his son Angus Mortson Jr. in 2010.

Mortson won Cups with the Leafs in 1947, 1948, 1949 and 1951, and also made the first NHL All-Star game in 1947.  He went on to play in eight All-Star Games in his career.

After the Leafs, Mortson made stops in Chicago and Detroit before retiring in 1959.

After his hockey career, he opened his own food brokerage business and in 1970, moved and settled in Timmins, where he worked as a stock broker and sales representative for a mining operation.

Gus was very involved in his community and was the coach of the Timmins North Stars and of the Timmins Kinsmen Juveniles.

He was actively involved with the Schumacher Lions Club for a number of years, also a past president of the Timmins Rotary Club, and a recipient of the Paul Harris Fellow Award.

The family would like to thank the staff at the Golden Manor on the Special Care unit for their excellent care.

Remembrance donations to the Alzheimer’s Society or the Canadian Cancer Society would be greatly appreciated.

The family invites friends to attend a memorial reception on Tuesday, August 11, 2015 from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. at the Miron-Wilson Funeral Home on Balsam Street South in Timmins.
