firstnationvoteridFirst Nations people in Timmins have a chance to register to vote next week.

Mattagami First Nation Councillor Jennifer Constant is hosting a Voter ID clinic on Tuesday, August 11th at 12:00pm at the Timmins Native Friendship Centre.

She says they’ll start with a presentation, and can find out of you’re registered to vote or not.  If you’re not, she says they have all the proper paperwork to get you ready for the October 19th vote.

“I think this particular election coming up, the importance of having First Nation people have not just a voice, but participating in the election process is very important, and I can’t stress that enough,” Constant added, citing that a number of issues that touched Aboriginals directly have come up, especially their rights in this past term.

“First Nations people are generally not happy with the infringement, if you want to call it that,” she said.

“You’ve seen movements like the Idle No More movement, where there’s been kind of a re-awakening, not that we weren’t awake before but there’s been direct impacts related to our rights, and people have stood up and said enough is enough.”

The event is free to attend, and there is a free lunch offered as well.
