Englehart, ON.

Inc. 1908

Pop: 1,479 (2016 census)

The Town of Englehart was created by the building of the Temiskaming and Northern Ontario Railway and named after Chairman Jacob Lewis Englehart. It became the Town of Englehart in January 1908, as a half-way point between North Bay and what became Cochrane, where the T & NO Railway met. Jacob Lewis Englehart, from Ohio, became a key figure in the development of the railway north of North Bay in Ontario.

Englehart was very well-known for the railway. In 1906 Englehart became a divisional point for the railway and work began to build repair shops and an engine roundhouse. Town lots were surveyed there and sold at public auction. A post office was established followed by stores, a school and churches. Soon Englehart became the little town it is today!

Englehart is rich in history and historical buildings. One of the most popular buildings would be the Englehart and Area Historical Museum. Built in 1909, the museum is the oldest and tallest building in Englehart housing three floors and a vast collection of artifacts spanning from the prehistoric era to the early 20th century. If history isn’t your thing, Englehart is popular for their fishing and hunting areas! If you’d like to learn more or plan your visit today, click HERE.
