Would a major switch on Third Avenue make life easier in the downtown core?

A proposal is out to turn the busy road into a one way eastbound between Mountjoy South and Spruce South, in an effort of putting in more parking.

Parking’s been a point of contention over the years locally.  What the proposal is looking to do is have diagonal parking (as indicated in the picture above).

“It would do a number of things,” City Clerk Steph Palmateer read.

“It would help us with that intersection at Mountjoy, and some of the issues we have there, plus it would significantly increase the parking availability in the downtown core.  We’re also requesting as part of this is that some of the boulevards that jet out into the street, they would be removed which would also increase parking.  So basically, this is a recommendation from the parking committee to council.”

“Basically, we want to know if it’s something you’d consider.”

The report, according to Palmateer, would identify the impact on traffic in the downtown area, it would identify the potential number of parking spaces and would highlight any operational efficiency that may or not be created.

When asking for a consensus, Councillor Rick Dubeau made a motion and wondering why it’s being put to a vote.

After some back and forth on the subject of when it’s appropriate to take a vote and not holding consensus votes, it ended with no vote.

That will come next week.
