SCI_MNR_logo_bronzeThe unofficial kick start to summer is upon us, and being able to do it safely is key.

The MNRF’s Heather Pridham says first of all, if you’re going out to the cottage or the lake, go prepared.

  • Be aware of changing weather conditions and have proper clothing on
  • Keep a bucket of water nearby for campfires; never leave fire unattended

In terms of food, Pridham says keep it in the car or in “bear-safe” trash cans, and keep a tidy campsite.

For plants and insects…leaves of three, let them be!

  • Cover up, screen shelters and light clothing for bugs
  • Some Ontario Parks have alcohol bans in place over the May long weekend so it’s a good idea to call ahead if that is a concern
  • Some northern Ontario parks open later in May and therefore may not be open this weekend – call ahead or visit www.ontarioparks.com
  • Visit www.ontarioparks.com to see what each park has to offer and to make reservations

On the boat, remember to have everything prepared before you hit the open waters.

The MNRF’s Adriana Pacitto says safety equipment such as a whistle, flashlight/signalling device, a 15 metre throw rope and a bailing bucket.

And keep in mind that impaired boating is just as serious of an offence as impaired driving.

Conservation Officers will be on duty, as well as OPP and Timmins Police all throughout the region.
