You now have until May 5th to get your taxes in.

Kurt Bigeau with Sunlife Financial says it’s the second year in a row the government makes this mistake.

“Any time they put out a communication and there’s a error they have to make good on it.  For procrastinators it’s a good thing.”

He adds, you should still be filing them on time otherwise you’re in for hefty fines.

“There are penalties and fees, interest on any money owing to the government and you can expect a letter pretty quick from the government.”

“If you have a pretty straight forward tax life and you’re comfortable with your abilities, there are computer programs at a low cost to do your own taxes.”
