Ontario has appointed a new judge to the Ontario Court of Justice, effective December 7, 2016.

Justice David Andrew Thomas was called to the bar in 1983. For the past 30 years, Justice Thomas has worked as Crown counsel, primarily in Timmins.

As Crown counsel, he helped introduce and implement programs to protect victims of domestic violence and divert offenders charged with minor criminal offences, as well as those with mental illness.

Justice Thomas has served on the boards of many non-profit organizations in his community, including Timmins and District Hospital, Canadian Mental Health Association, Timmins Native Friendship Centre and Timmins Family Counselling Centre.

He received this year’s Governor General’s Award (Sovereign’s Medal) for his contributions to the community.

Chief Justice Lise Maisonneuve has assigned Justice Thomas to preside in Timmins.
