City council in Timmins has an opening.

Ward 1 councillor Andre Grzela is stepping down from his position after making the difficult decision to move to Orleans, Ontario.

There, Grzela and his family plans to open a Beachcomber Hot Tub store in 2017.

“It is a great honour to have had the opportunity to serve on Council, a position that enabled me to help many residents and learn so much from staff and other members of Council,” Grzela said in a media release.

“The residents, staff and Council have taught me many life lessons that, I believe, have enabled me to make this difficult choice. A wise person once told me, ‘trust the timing of your life’ and that’s exactly what we’re doing. I would like to thank the residents of Timmins, and not just those who have supported me. Those who opposed my decisions made me work harder to ensure I was able to explain the rationale behind the decisions; which proved to be an invaluable exercise.”

The decision, Grzela told local media at a press conference, also requires him to leave his post as MPP Gilles Bisson’s Administrative Assistant.

Mayor Steve Black says he’s disappointed to see Grzela leave, but wishes him and his family all the best.

“He’s been a strong advocate for the community, for residents of all ages and really, a champion of where I see the majority of this council focused, which is developing the community for the future and ensuring Timmins remains a great place to live.”

Grzela has some advice for whomever replaces him.

“Get ready for many meetings,” he said with a smile, “Be ready to put in the work because we do have a great city and there’s a reason for that.  It’s because we have a lot of elected officials who put in the time and really care about this place.”

In closing, Grzela invites any resident who is traveling to the Ottawa area to stop by his store for a visit and say hello.

Grzela’s last day will be Tuesday, January 3rd.

In terms of finding a replacement, Black says council will likely call a special meeting next week.

They have a couple options: hold a by-election or set out a process to appoint someone to the position.
