While the next week of rain—or snow—could be a big indicator, the Mattagami Regional Conservation Authority is not concerned with flood-like conditions in the Timmins area.

MRCA General Manager David Vallier says we got less snow this past winter but more water content.

“The way the snow (melted), it’s cooler at night, we have lower inflows…it’s spawn time now, were reducing some of the flows with not us, (but) OPG,” he said, “But it’s part in parcel of the city, the Conservation Authority, the MNR and OPG right now managing that potential risk.”

Vallier says as of their meeting last Friday, flooding is dependent on the weather and they don’t see a lot of it in their forecast, comparing the risk to last year.

They also take a look at other bodies of water such as Porcupine Lake, Porcupine River, Kamiskotia Lake and “Little Kam.”

On Porcupine Lake and River, the MRCA GM says they had some higher elevations a couple weeks ago because of the snow melt, but there is no cause for concern there at this point.

Vallier adds if anything changes, they will provide updates.
