The lane closure on Algonquin between Charles St and Avenue Rd is staying for the time being.

The westbound lane has been closed since early January due to some settlement which is occurring above the existing 18-inch clay sanitary pipe. City staff and consultants are in the process of completing a thorough investigation and will maintain lane closure for precautionary reasons.

“We have completed a condition survey of the sanitary line, and have chosen to keep the lane closed while we evaluate the most effective course of repair,” said Public Utilities Manager Steven Kukulka. “We don’t want to risk loosening any additional material, which may cause the road condition to worsen.”

Kukulka explained that pipe replacement would require complete closure of this section of Algonquin, thus other potential means of repair are being evaluated. He has committed to providing residents with an update in about a week, following this evaluation.
