A fire on the roof of a Birch Street South home Thursday night looks to be “accidental” in nature by Fire Chief Mike Pintar.

He says volunteer firefighters from Schumacher responded to the flames, which were already through the roof when they arrived.

“We worked at containing it, some of the roof had collapsed so it was difficult,” Pintar added, “We were able to get some of it from inside as well.”

Pintar believes roofing work is the cause of the fire, saying the lone man doing the work smelled smoke coming from a vent in the attic.

He adds there’s no price tag on the amount of damage, but the whole roof needs to be replaced and there’s some water damage too.
