See the sun rise in a whole new way Wednesday.

Wednesday, June 21st is National Aboriginal Day. It kicks off at 5:30am from Participark with a sunrise ceremony, which is an interesting thing to watch, according to the Aboriginal Organizations Committee’s Melanie Hannah.

“They have an elder doing the ceremony around the fire,” she said, “There’s just a lot of ceremony and tradition involved in that, so just to be a part of that experience is pretty cool and pretty humbling.”

The day will be full of activities for all ages, including for the first time, throat singers.

Hannah says it’s hard to explain how it’s done, but it’s usually done with two people.

“They kind of go back and forth and it tells a story,” she adds, “Every song that they sing actually has a story to it, and they usually explain the story before they perform it.”

Hannah goes on to explain that this is a great opportunity for Aboriginals to celebrate their culture, and welcome and show others what it’s all about.

There’s also games, a BBQ and much more for people of all ages.
