Crime Prevention Week is here, taking place from November 5-11, 2017. This week is an opportunity for police services across Ontario to raise awareness and educate residents about how to prevent crime.

“Crime prevention is truly a shared responsibility,” said Timmins Police Chief John Gauthier. “That’s why the Timmins Police Service is committed to making sure residents are aware of strategies and best practices to be proactively involved in crime prevention.”

The Timmins Police Service will host two events to recognize Crime Prevention Week 2017. They include:

Ask An Officer – Facebook LIVE event: November 9, 2017

Join the Timmins Police Service on Thursday, November 9 from 6 p.m. – 7 p.m. for our first ever Facebook LIVE event! Our panel of officers will be engaging with followers, providing some crime prevention tips, and answering any policing-related questions residents may have. Those unable to join the live event can send in their questions ahead of time by sending us a private message on Facebook – we’ll try to get to everyone’s questions! Of course, followers of the live event will be able to ask questions directly! Get your questions ready and join us as we go live!

Document Shredding Day: November 10, 2017 – TPS North parking garage

The best way to ensure that your personal information doesn’t fall into the wrong hands is to refrain from giving it out, and ensure that personal documents are protected. On November 10, 2017 from 12 p.m. – 4 p.m., residents are invited to drop off their personal documents for shredding, free of charge. This community event is designed to help prevent crimes such as fraud and identity theft. Those planning on participating in the event should keep these guidelines in mind:

  • Paper materials only – other items such as discs will not be accepted.
  • Items must be in boxes with paper clips/binders/duotangs removed.
  • A maximum of five (5) boxes per resident will be accepted.
  • Businesses are exempt from the Document Shredding Day event. Documents from businesses will not be accepted.

Residents are encouraged to keep an eye on the Timmins Police Service’s social media pages this week for additional Crime Prevention Week tips.
