Porcupine Health Unit looking for answers to solve high teen pregnancy rate

For every 1,000 teen girls in the Porcupine Health Unit district, 60+ are getting pregnant.

The PHU is holding an information session on the social factors contributing to this extremely high rate of teen pregnancy.

Public Health Nurse and author of a report on teen pregnancy, which will be shared at the session, Laurie Dagg-Labine says they have found access to education, safe housing and opportunity paired with socioeconomic status plays a factor in the vulnerability to certain barriers that cause teen pregnancy.

Dagg-Labine encourages anyone who works with teens, who has dealt with teen pregnancy or just wants to learn more, to attend the information session and share;

The information session will be followed up with a strategic planning session with people from across the community; service providers who work in health care, social services and education. From there, they will move forward with a committee of these people with the plan they will create.

It begins at 7:00 tonight at the Porcupine Dante Club.
