The government is helping local organizations hire over 200 students this summer.MP, Charlie Angus says the region is receiving $653,000 for local, mostly non-profit organizations, to employ students from high school, college and university.

“We have young people working in arts and theatre schools, public health, working with first nations, environmental issues, with children. For each of these of these organizations it’s a chance for them to augment their workforce in the summer but for our young people it’s an opportunity to get some real experience.”

Summer Student with the Red Cross, Samantha Letemplier says it’s the perfect opportunity to get the experience needed before she’s done University.

“this is giving me a good feel of what it’ll be like in the workforce. I’m really enjoying interacting with people, dealing with administrative works and i’m really liking it.”

Rhonda Latendress with the Alzheimer’s Society says she couldn’t hire a students with the grant.

“The summer students gives our clients more opportunities to do a variety of programming.  Things they don’t get to do in every day life.”
