If you’re looking for a getaway this weekend, then you might want to literally try and get away when you try to Escape the Splex at Archie Dillon Sportsplex this weekend.

The arena-sized escape room puts teams in a scenario where they have to solve puzzles and clues in order to get out of the arena. Nadia Riopel, who helped organize the escape room, says it’s kid-friendly, and even though no one has completed the challenge yet, people won’t find the clues too difficult.

“You don’t need Google or anything,” she says. “We’ve given you everything you need to get to the next step.”

The premise behind the game is to find your scattered equipment that a rival roller derby team spitefully hid around the arena. The team needs to solve clues and unlock secrets so they can escape before they get “locked in” by an arena employee.

“There’s a couple of twists in the story,” Nadia hinted. “It’s literally all over the arena, there’s clues that you’ve gotta get which will get you to the next step to eventually get you to the door…and maybe something else,” she said.

“There’s a Fear Factor part in it, kind of. And then there’s the Amazing Race, kind of all racing at the same time,” she explained. “So we kind of just threw a little of everything together, trying to be original.”

Teams have 45 minutes to find all their gear and make it out of the arena. Teams of up to 4 adults (families or groups of 5 or more can partake as long as no more than 4 adults are in one team) will ideally compete against other teams to race to the exit doors first. And the prize is worth more than just bragging rights.

The top prize for the fastest team to win is 4 tickets to Rock on the River.

The escape room goes hand in hand with the roller derby game tomorrow night at Archie Dillon. Escape the Splex is raising funds for the game, which will see the Timmins Gold Miners Daughters facing the new North Bay team, the Bombshell Bobbers. This is the only home game for the Timmins team, which will be made up of new members and vets from the past. The door prize at the game is 2 tickets to Stars and Thunder. There are other prizes at the game too, including money for a tattoo and a spa package.

“We got a lot of gifts from the community,” Riopel said. “People donated stuff so we’ll have random draws during the game.[…] We teamed up with the Mudfest. […] So we worked with them, we worked with Stars and Thunder. We try and really get everybody involved and help each other out and advertise for each other.”

“Everybody in Timmins should come!” she added. Riopel says attendance at the local roller derby games hasn’t been great in the past few years and the team could use all the support they can get.

Tickets for the Derby Game are $10 but if you register for Escape the Splex before Saturday night (even if your team doesn’t play until Sunday) then you can get your free tickets for the game. You can register at Alfie’s Cigar Store or at the Archie Dillon Sportsplex.

The Escape the Splex Escape Room is open all weekend with teams getting started at noon on Saturday, June 2nd until 3pm. Teams can start playing as early as 11am on Sunday, June 3rd. It costs $125 to register your team of up to 4 adults. This cost includes tickets to the derby game Saturday night.

You can watch the Gold Miner’s Daughters take on the North Bay Bombshell Bobbers this Saturday, June 2nd at 7pm.
